About Flagler College

Flagler College, often abbreviated as Flagler, is a four year, co-educational, residential college in St. Augustine, Florida, USA.

Flagler College was founded in 1968. The institution has opened as a women’s college, then Flagler was reorganized as co-educational in 1971. The College is located in the historic tourist town of St. Augustine, just off I-95 on the northeast coast of Florida, 35 miles south of Jacksonville and 55 miles north of Daytona Beach, providing a unique backdrop for academic and social growth. Flager College, according to 2009 data, had a total number of 2716 students enrolled, 1095 men (40.3%) and 1621 (59.7%) women. Flager College is offering educational programs in numerous fields of study, that include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science in Public Administration.

The name of the college comes from Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, he built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, first edifice in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. After several improvements of different companies, the hotel was transffered to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings. One of the latest additions to campus is a multimillion-dollar Student Center on Sevilla Street.

The campus of Flagler College, comprising 15 buildings, is located close to the main study buildings and it provides lodging for both men and women, divided into separate dormitories. Ponce de Leon Hall is the main building of the campus, it is a National Historic Landmark, here is the residence of female dormitories, as well as the dining hall. The male dormitories are located at Lewis House, which opened in 1987, and Cedar House, which was constructed in 2004. The campus also includes several other historic structures, plus a 789-seat hall, a gymnasium, three men's residence halls, a sq.ft. 58,900 library and a radio station. A 19-acre sports field is two miles from campus.
